A Little History

Center of Temecula Wine Country

In the heart of Temecula Wine Country, Rusty Fork Ranch stands as a testament to the area’s vibrant evolution. Our story intertwines with the region’s rich history, which took root in 1968 with the first vineyards planted by the pioneering Cilurzo family. Interestingly, their son Vinnie, a key figure at Russian River Brewing Company, charted a different course, creating the legendary Pliny the Elder – a delightful twist of fate that blends wine heritage with craft beer brilliance. You might even savor a sip at our local winery, Robert Renzoni.

With the advent of the AirBnB era, Temecula has transformed into a lively, dynamic destination. But it’s not just about the wine. Imagine soaring over vineyards in a hot air balloon, horseback riding amidst the grapes, rumbling through the countryside on a sidecar motorcycle, or leisurely touring wineries. Add to that mix E-Bike adventures, escapades in the brewery district, endless nights in Old Town Temecula, the thrill of Pechanga Casino, hikes in the Santa Rosa Plateau, and a plethora of bars and restaurants to discover – your itinerary here is as full and varied as a vintage wine.

Tyler & Marjori’s 2023 Best of Temecula Wine Country

Super Duper Simple Guide to Temecula Wine Country and Old Town

The following questions and answers are based on us living in Temecula Wine Country since 2015 and hosting approximately 1,000 guests per year. We hang out and chat with every guest here at our mini goat and wine farm in the epicenter of wine country, so we do feel we’re experts about this topic. There’s more to Temecula than what we are presenting here, but the Q&A below really hits the bullseye. Let us also say these are not marketing partners listed below or some sort of fake reviews. These are absolutely our true and genuine answers and our own opinions. Legit!

Q: What is the best hotel, short term rental or bed and breakfast to stay in Temecula Wine Country?
A: Rusty Fork Ranch is the hands-down best place to stay. Tyler & Marjori are the owners and hosts at this sensational modernized farmhouse offering a ‘Bed and Coffee’ experience. Ask anyone, research us, check out 1000 AirBnB reviews – Rusty Fork Ranch is absolutely the best and undisputed #1 top-ranked place to stay. It’s real, we’re real, our mini farm is cool. Have the best time ever by booking now! Just sayin’.

Q: What are the most fun experiences we should not miss in Temecula?
A: Wine tastings, restaurants, bars, music, hot air balloon rides, spas, sidecar motorcycle tours, e-bike excursions, horseback riding, hiking, events and weddings, golf, Pechanga Casino, shopping, Vail HQ, Temecula Olive Oil Company, and winery tours are the top ranked experiences. Check our Favorites page for a list of top picks!

Q: What are the best seasons to visit Temecula Wine Country?
A: Spring and Fall rule! The region is still beautiful all year long. Hot months are July through September. Chilly in January and February. But Spring and Fall offer perfect temperatures and there is a rolling sea of green vineyards in every direction! If you’re house hunting or searching for picturesque photos this is the time to see the best of our natural terrain and landscapes at sunrise and sunset.

Q: Best ways to travel through Temecula Wine Country?
A: E-bikes, Sidecar Tours, Van-n-Boozy and Uber/Lyft, or a designated driver are the best ways to get around! Of course there are other options, but those are our top favorites and the easiest ways to move around. If you’re a pilot, there’s the small French Valley Airport just a few minutes from here. Check our Favorites page for best options.

Q: How far away are the wineries from each other?
A: Between 1 minute and 8 minutes. Generally speaking the Temecula Wine Country region is compact. Although it’s not ideal for walking from winery-to-winery due to fast moving traffic, the actual distances between wineries are very short. Most wineries are next to each other.

Q: What are Tyler and Marjori’s top wineries in Temecula Wine Country?
A: Akash, Lorimar, Peltzer, Wiens, Doffo, Leoness, are the top dogs currently. The largest winery is Wilson Creek and has a fun busy environment with big beautiful trees.

Q: What are Tyler & Marjori’s top favorite restaurants in Temecula Wine Country and Old Town Temecula?
A: Goat and Vine, Small Barn, and Leoness are our very top ranked restaurants at this time. For breakfast, it’s Toast!

Q: Is beer a thing in Temecula?
A: Yes, there are over a dozen breweries in the Old Town Temecula area and north on Jefferson Avenue. And a few wineries serve a brew on tap! Check out our beer district map.

Q: Is Old Town Temecula happening?
A: Yes, hell yes.  Only 5 minutes from Temecula Wine Country, Old Town rips it up until the wee hours of the morning almost every night.  It’s like a little Mardi Gras at night. During the day it’s a bustling fun walk through the restaurants, bars, shops in an old west kind of way.

Q: When are wine country tasting room open hours?
A: 10 AM to 5 PM is common for many wineries to serve tastings. A few wineries offer food options. Only a short list of wineries tend to have night life until 10 PM. Check the local buzz online or chat with people and businesses around Temecula to find out which ones are staying open at night. Things change periodically, but locals know that night life is primarily down in Old Town Temecula until 2 AM.

Q: Do wineries offer vineyard tours or wine production tours?
A: Yes, some wineries offer vineyard tours and wine production tours. You’ll need to ask around about current schedules since there is no absolute calendar. See a map of wineries in Temecula.

Q: Are there “Crush” or “Grape Stomp” events during harvest season?
A: Yes, between August (white wine varietals mainly), September and October (reds primarily) there are numerous Crush parties and events around wine country when the weather is just right for the grapes to hold both sugars and acids at desirable levels. Check Temecula Valley wineries for when they’re scheduling Crush events.  Then you get to stomp on grapes and get messy like Lucille Ball.

Q: Looking for work or jobs in Temecula Wine Country or Old Town?
A: Check out Temecula Valley job listings.

Q: Are there wine growing and wine making educational opportunities while visiting?
A: Yes, not only can Tyler provide basic education in wine grape growing here at Rusty Fork Ranch during your stay, he can show you around our non-commercial, small wine making operation and explain in some detail about processes.  We grow a variety of Bordeaux and Rhone varieties of grapes here on site. You may also check with wineries regarding possible tours.

Okay so there’s our official favorite stuff in the region. There’s obviously a lot more, but we don’t want to go over the top here on our website. Also there are some secrets we only share with guests and won’t post online for the public. So, see you soon and Cheers!

Hope that helps!
